MANILA, Philippines — A team of students from UP Diliman won an award from Sun Microsystems for a Java application that runs on a mobile device and helps doctors treat poisoning cases faster.
The team of Diana Bandojo, Maria Jaymee Gatapia and Reggie Santos from the UP Department of Computer Science won the annual Duke’s Choice Award under the medical solutions category.
The trio won for their application called “Expert System for Poisoning” or ESP, which is meant for use by doctors especially in remote areas.
The program uses a database of common poisons and a rules-based approach to assess a poisoning case and recommend possible solutions. According to the team’s technical paper, the ESP prototype has been validated using 50 test cases.
The team’s project proposal cited the miserable doctor-to-patient ratio in the Philippines — one doctor per 80,000 people (as of 2005) when the recommended ratio by the World Health Organization is one doctor per 20,000 people.
Such an application can be placed in a mobile device and is meant to enable doctors in remote areas do faster treatment.
The Duke Award (named after the Java mascot “Duke”) is Sun’s yearly global search for innovative programs running on the Java platform.
Winners are selected by James Gosling, the inventor of the Java programming language, and a Java technology leadership team. The winners are announced during Sun’s annual JavaOne conference. –Lawrence Casiraya, INQUIRER.net
