MANILA, Philippines – The government will hold a three-day job fair starting June 12, Independence Day, to help workers who lost their jobs due to the global economic crisis.

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said Thursday the job fairs from June 12 to 14 will benefit from more than P30 million in government funding.

“We are supposed to come out with a three-day job fair on June 12; job fair ng national government ito. Sa June 13, hiring for the local government tapos June 14 sa displaced OFW,” he said in an interview on dzRH radio.

He said President Arroyo already ordered the cancellation of the annual Independence Day parade, which he said would have cost P30 million.

Mrs. Arroyo then ordered the amount channeled to the job fairs, he said.

“Ang pera na P30 million pinagutos na ibalik sa taumbayan sa Independence Day job fair [The P30 million for the parade will be channeled to the Independence Day job fair],” he said.

Other sources of funding for the job fairs will come from a 1.5-percent cut in maintenance budget of government agencies, which will be re-channeled to personnel services for hiring new people. – GMANews.TV
