MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) The Philippine National Police (PNP) has created a special task group tasked to put an end to political killings and election-related violence, less than a year before the 2010 elections, PNP Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa said.
In compliance with an earlier directive from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Task Group Elected Government Officials (EGO) was ordered to prevent political killings and resolve past cases, Verzosa told a news conference.
“Task group EGO will harmonize all efforts of the PNP to investigate these cases. The approach will be a concentration of efforts,” he said.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) will handle the task force, the PNP chief said.
The PNP has recorded some 52 cases of politicians killed since January 2009, including attacks on mayors and village officials. –Abigail Kwok, INQUIRER.net, with a report from Tarra Quismundo, Philippine Daily Inquirer
