Leading data provider Thomson Reuters has announced plans to expand its legal content business and that is has chosen the Philippines to host its facility.

“The talent of the people, education, fluency in English, work ethic, young and dynamic workforce, I could go on and on. [The Philippines] is a very special place,” said Fred Gordon, vice president for content operations of Thomson Reuters Legal, during a press briefing this week.

company executives explained that the type of work planned for the Manila facility would involve analyzing, coding, proofreading, editing, merging, rendering and validating data.

specifically, Thomson Reuters Legal vice president for litigation content center Tom Leighton said some basic tasks include document receipt, copy preparation, conversion of source documents, application of coding to documents, and data load support.

“We need good, strong people, with knowledge of the West-quality format. We also need someone who’s quick and accurate,” he said, adding that it would be helpful if the applicant has enough job experience, and has a background in law, literature, arts and letters, or journalism.

There is no specific timetable yet for Thomson Reuters Legal’s operations in the Philippines, with company executives explaining that their progress would depend on developments in recruitment and infrastracture.

However, Thomson Reuters Legal vice president for global centers Cheryl Giraulo said the company is hoping to start operating in the country before the year ends.

Philippine senior site offider Raoul Teh, for his part, said the company is considering the McKinley Hill at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig as a site for the facility.

Meanwhile, Thomson Reuters Legal said it has also made preparations for its new facility in India, only a new months ahead of its planned operations in the Philippines.

Company executives said, however, that the type of work there would be different from what they are planning for the country, as India’s operations would revolve around intellectual property and product testing of new services.

Thomson Reuters, a result of the combined businesses of Thomson Corp. and Reuters Corp PLC, is the leading source of intelligent information for the world’s businesses and professionals.

The company has been in the Philippines for 63 years, with its operations including a customer support group, a content operations group, a Media/International Financing Review magazine telesales team, and an Investment and Advisory Division.
