MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) reported yesterday that the number of Filipinos infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has increased this year, with most cases coming from the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) sector.
The latest HIV and AIDS Registry Report of the National Epidemiology Center (NEC) showed that Filipinos who acquired HIV increased from 244 during the period January to June 2008 to 362 in the first six months of this year.
In June alone, 40 individuals were infected by HIV compared to only 32 last year, the report said.
Out of the 362 new cases this year, 97 percent or 350 were transmitted through sexual contact, with two coming from mothers to their children.
The other 10 cases are unknown, the NEC said.
It said all 40 cases recorded in June were transmitted through sexual intercourse.
In a related development, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) announced yesterday that Taiwanese firms are in need of 150 factory workers by the end of the month.
The POEA said the IMEI Foods Corp. is in need of 120 male and 30 female workers in the Taipei factory.
Among the requirements for the male applicants are that they should not be more than 32 years old, at least 5’6” in height, and at least 58 kilos but not more than 78 kilos depending on height.
Male applicants should possess skills in welding, airconditioning repair, electrical and cooking, among others, the POEA said.
On the other hand, female applicants should be below 28 years old, at least 5’2” and weigh no more than 68 kilos but not under 48 kilos.
Female applicants must have nursing background in relation to handling injectible materials in food preparation, food quality control, and can operate food industry machines.
The POEA said qualified applicants may immediately submit personally a detailed resumé with job description, school credentials, employment certificates, passport copy (valid for at least three years) and two pieces 2×2 recent picture at the Manpower Registry Division, Window I, at the POEA ground floor in Ortigas Avenue, Mandaluyong City on or before July 31.
