‘OFW hiring in Mideast to drop’

MANILA, Philippines – The local recruitment industry yesterday warned of a massive drop in the hiring of Filipino workers in the Middle East with the implementation of a stricter regulation on the deployment of low-skilled workers abroad.

Recruitment leaders said the new Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) regulation is likely to discourage foreign employers, particularly from the Middle East, from hiring Filipino workers.

“The new regulation entails a maze of forms and certifications that could frustrate foreign employers from the Middle East from hiring Filipino workers,” recruitment industry consultant Manny Geslani said yesterday.

Geslani noted that low-skilled workers, including household workers, account for 40 percent of the total annual deployment of Filipino workers to the Middle East. – Mayen Jaymalin, Philippine Star
