MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine math team bagged 16 gold medals at the 5th International Mathematics Contest in Singapore from August 20 to 24.
Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Philippines (MTG-Philippines), was very proud of the spectacular performance of the Filipino whiz kids, saying the kids were justly rewarded for all the hard work they put in to prepare for the IMC tilt.
“This is the best performance of our students in the competition. Almost all our contestants each won a medal,” said Chua.
All Filipino contestants won medals except for two students who got merit certificates. A total of 104 Filipino delegates participated in the annual contest in Singapore.
Aside from the 16 gold medals, the Philippine math team also harvested a total of 27 silvers and 59 bronze medals.
The total medal tally of 102 earned the Philippines a second-place spot behind China.
A total of 557 contestants from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and the Philippines participated in the math competition.
The gold medalists in the elementary division were Andrea Aiyanna Borbe of Uno High School, Christopher Kohchet Chua of Saint Jude Catholic School, Mark Christopher Uy of Xavier School, Farrell Eldrian Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy, Josh Thomas Clement of West Visayas State University, Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa of Paref Westbridge School-Iloilo, Andrew Vince Lee of Xavier, Raphael Villaluz of San Beda College Alabang, Andrew Brandono Ong of Chiang Kai Shek College,Czarina Angela Lao of Saint Jude, Neil Phillip Poral of West Visayas State, Ana Karenina Batungbakal of San Beda Alabang, and Allen Cedrick Domingo of San Beda Alabang.
In the high school division, the gold medalists were Audrey Celine Lao of Saint Jude, Camille Tyrene Dee of Immaculate Conception Academy, and Hazel Joy Shi of Philippine Cultural High School.
