The Supreme Court has exempted indigent clients of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) from payment of legal fees. The High Court, in a 25-page resolution penned by Associate Renato Corona, approved the Rule on the Exemption from the Payment of Legal Fees of the Clients of the National Committee on Legal Aid (NCLA) and the Legal Aid Office of the Local Chapter of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.

The request for exemption was filed by the IBP-Misamis Oriental Chapter, which the Court also lauded “for its effort to help improve the administration of justice, particularly, the access to justice by the poor.” In approving said Rule, the COurt stressed that “the COnstitution guarantees the rights of the poor to free access to the courts and to adequate legal assistance. –William B.
