Jobs expo geared toward typhoon victims

An upcoming job fair organized by foreign businessmen will give priority to job seekers who were affected by tropical storms Ondoy and Pepeng.

The American, Australian-New Zealand, British, Canadian, and European business chambers in the country said they will be holding a “Foreign Chambers Local Employment Expo 2009” at the activity center of Market! Market! mall in Taguig City on October 22 to 23, 2009.

According to Chris Ward, Australia-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines vice president and the expo’s chairman, the five chambers are looking at either providing a separate lane for the typhoon victims or putting up a two-hour window exclusively for typhoon victims for the two-day job fair.

About 3,000 jobs will be offered by 50 companies from the business process outsourcing (BPO), health care, real estate and telecommunication sectors during this year’s Foreign Chambers Employment Expo.

“We believe there are a great number of individuals from the typhoon-ravaged areas who are qualified to have a career with some of the companies that are participating [in Foreign Chambers Employment Expo 2009],” Ward said.

“We were greatly saddened by the tragedy typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng have brought to the country. It gave the employment expo we will be holding this month a whole new meaning,” he added. –Ben Arnold O. de Vera, Manila Times
