Jobs, incomes fell in second quarter amid slowdown

EMPLOYMENT in major industries, particularly manufacturing and mining, fell for eight consecutive quarters in the April to June period this year, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) said. In a statement, the agency said the employment index dipped by a faster 8.8 percent in the second quarter this year compared with the 7.2-percent drop in the first quarter.

The NSCB said employment in mining and quarrying, as well as in manufacturing dropped by 31 percent and 11.7 percent, respectively.

This was followed by private services and finance, jobs in which dropped 5.9 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

The transportation and communication, real estate, electricity and water, as well as trade sectors, however, saw minimal growth in employment.

The NSCB also reported a decline in compensation in mining and quarrying by 23.9 percent, as well as in manufacturing by 8.9 percent; and real estate, 0.9 percent. These caused the total compensation index to drop by 1.5 percent.

However, transportation and communication, electricity and water, private services, as well as finance and trade, saw positive growth of 8.7 percent, 7.7 percent, 3.3 percent, 2.6 percent and 0.8 percent, respectively.

With employment declining faster than compensation, total compensation per employee grew by 8.1 percent, slowing down from 8.3 percent in the previous year.

Except for real estate and trade, the NSCB said all other sectors posted positive growth in compensation, led by mining and quarrying at 10.3 percent, and private services at 9.8 percent.

The total gross revenue of industries declined by 0.4 percent in the second quarter from a growth of 15 percent in the same quarter last year.

“This is the first decline of the gross revenue index,” the NSCB said.

While all other sectors posted positive growth, the NSCB said this was not enough to offset the 12-percent decline in manufacturing, its second decline in the series. –Darwin G. Amojelar, Senior Reporter, Manila Times
