Report “no permit, no exam” hotline for students

MANILA, Philippines – The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) has set up a hotline for students and their parents to report violators of a Commission on Higher Education (CHED) directive lifting the “no permit, no exam” policy in colleges and universities.

NUSP national president Einstein Recedes said their move to set up the hotline was to ensure the compliance of higher education institutions to CHED Memorandum Order 2 dated Jan. 22.

“We urge the students and parents to report their complaints regarding this matter (through) our hotline at 0927-7515365,” Recedes said.

The NUSP said CHED had issued the order after Kabataan party-list Rep. Raymond Palatino filed a bill filed in Congress, House Bill 6799, seeking to junk the “no permit, no exam” policy imposed by colleges and universities.

The NUSP said that in some schools, students who failed to take an examination were automatically given a failing mark, regardless if they were academically outstanding in other school requirements.

Last semester, some students who were affected by typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” were not allowed to take exam because of unsettled fees, the NUSP said.

“The youths’ right to education should not be compromised due to financial capacities,” Recedes said.   – Rainier Allan Ronda, Philippine Star
