KUALA LUMPUR – Six Filipino workers died at a water treatment plant in Malaysia’s eastern state of Sabah after they inhaled poisonous gas while cleaning a tank, according to reports Tuesday.

The 6, aged between 16 and 30, died in the accident late Sunday after 2 of the workers entered the tank to do cleaning work and failed to emerge an hour later.

State Fire and Rescue Department chief Khairuddin Drahman said the 4 other workers went down to search for the pair, and also fell unconscious, according to the New Straits Times newspaper.

Khairuddin said they were believed to have inhaled carbon monoxide fumes, emitted by the generator used in the cleaning work.

Sabah authorities could not immediately be reached by Agence France-Presse.
