Acting Social Welfare and Development Secretary Celia Capadocia-Yangco told The Times Sunday that older persons now staying in the Golden Acres compound in Bago Bantay, Quezon City, will soon move to their new “Haven for the Elderly” in Tanay, Rizal.
Acting Secretary Yangco said the new facility is complete and now being fully furnished.
The Haven for the Elderly consists of nine buildings with living quarters big enough to accommodate 270 older persons.
The facility has two staff houses, one central laundry area, one central kitchen, and one activity center.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo provided P200 million for the transfer of Golden Acres residents to Tanay. This was approved by Congress in 2008, the DSWD secretary said.
The new facility in Tanay is in a pristine, sprawling 10-hectare lot. The area is conducive to the health and well-being of older persons because of its fresh air and green environment free from pollution and any toxic elements found in the metropolis.
“The health and well-being of the older persons are primary considerations for the transfer since older persons need a peaceful and unpolluted environment conducive to their well-being, where they can move around freely,” Acting Secretary Yangco said.
The Golden Acres facility in Bago Bantay, located at the back of SM North Edsa in Quezon City, can only accommodate 150 older persons. With the increase in the number of residents cared for by DSWD, the center has become cramped.
Overcrowding at the QC center has made the residents susceptible to ailments such as skin diseases, colds and flu. The polluted and noisy environment in Bago Bantay, QC, makes the situation more unhealthy especially for the elderly.
Since the transfer plan was formulated in 2007, the staff of Golden Acres have been informed about it and every step along the way. DSWD management and Golden Acres staff have been in continuing dialogue about the transfer.
Plans are now being drawn to accommodate the workers in other DSWD centers or offices in Metro Manila, if possible and, if not, to provide alternatives, subject to relevant rules and regulations governing personnel. –Manila Times
