For people and institutions that believe condoms are evil and cannot stop the spread of HIV/AIDs, let them listen to what the World Health Organization says. The STAR issue of Tuesday (March 23, page 6) stated that condoms could prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other specially transmitted diseases. This report came on the heels of condom-oppositor rejection of the latex device as being too fragile to prevent infection and conception, and demand to have Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral resign her post for supporting the distribution of free condoms on the eve of Valentine’s Day to raise awareness of the dreaded disease.
STAR health reporter Sheila Crisostomo reported that Dr. Soe Nyunt-U, WHO representative in the Philippines, said, “the correct and consistent use of good-quality condoms confers a level of protection as high as 85-90 percent against HIV transmission.
“Male and female condoms, when properly kept, stored, handled and used, are the only scientifically proven barrier products currently available against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.” –Domini M. Torrevillas (The Philippine Star)
