SOME of President Gloria Arroyo’s allies won in the country’s first automated elections on Monday despite being linked to the unpopular chief executive, but most of her Cabinet men lost even if she won as a representative of Pampanga province.
Former Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, former Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya Jr., former Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane, former deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez, and former presidential legal adviser Sergio Apostol were expected to be proclaimed winners in Monday’s local elections.
Yap ran unopposed as a congressman for Bohol’s Third District, and as of Tuesday morning had 130,918 votes to his name.
Andaya, a congressional candidate for Camarines Sur’s First District, had 54,842 votes compared with the 9,746 votes received by Nestor de los Reyes, his only rival.
Ebdane, who initially aspired for the presidency, and then gave up to run for mayor of Zambales, headed for victory Tuesday as he led re-electionist Gov. Amor Deloso by 73,740 votes to 59,201 as of 3 p.m., or a difference of 14,539 votes.
Golez, a candidate of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, was elected representative of Bacolod City’s lone district.
And Apostol won as representative of Leyte’s Second District, replacing his wife Trinidad Apostol, after he received 67,079 votes against his rival Balderian Rustico’s 26,948.
Still, former Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita faced defeat in Batangas’ First District after he tallied only 92,207 votes against his sole rival Tomas Apacible’s 116,357.
In the five-way mayoralty race in Iloilo City, former presidential legal counsel Raul Gonzalez bowed to Jed Patrick Mabilog.
Former Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera was second to front-runner Wilfredo Enverga, who received 88,080 votes.
In Pangasinan, former Presidential Management Staff Secretary and presidential peace adviser Hermogenes Esperon placed second to Marlyn Primicias-Agabas in the three-way congressional fight for the province’s Sixth District.
Former Agriculture Undersecretary Jocelyn Bolante trailed incumbent Gov. Victor Tanco in the three-way gubernatorial race in Capiz.
Former Environment secretary Mike Defensor lost to actor turned politician and Quezon City Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista in that city’s mayoralty race.
And former Environment Secretary Lito Atienza failed to regain political control of Manila after he lost to incumbent Mayor Alfredo Lim. –Rey E. Requejo with Cecille Garcia, Manila Standard Today
