MANILA, Philippines – Seven in 10 Filipinos approve of the Department of Health’s promotion of condom use to prevent the transmission of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a recent survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.

The survey, conducted from April 16 to 19, showed that 72 percent of Filipinos favor the promotion of correct and consistent use of condoms to prevent the spread of the virus.

Approval is highest in the National Capital Region (80 percent) and balance Luzon (75 percent). It is likewise high in the Visayas (64 percent) and Mindanao (70 percent).

Support is higher in urban areas (75 percent) than in rural areas (67 percent).

The survey, commissioned by The Forum for Family Planning and Development, Inc., has a random sampling population of 2,400 adults and an error margin of plus or minus two percentage points.

“This survey only shows that Filipinos still trust the Department of Health in matters related to public health,” The Forum president Ben de Leon said. –-Helen Flores (The Philippine Star) with Mayen Jaymalin
