BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Smoke, sparks and popping sounds much like what’s heard during the New Year came from the ceiling in front of the Provincial Election office in Bacolod City at 11:05 a.m. Friday.

Personnel of the Commission on Elections, who were packing election results and paraphernalia for shipping to Congress, and the Comelec Records and Statistics Department scampered to save the materials, Comelec staff member Jaime Tan said.

Firefighters who quickly responded to the alarm bore a hole in the smoking ceiling outside the Comelec office and discovered a problem in the electrical wiring that was quickly put out.

There was no damage to the Comelec materials.

Ian de Ramos, Panaad Office park administrator, who holds office in the Negros Occidental Barangay Center that also houses the Comelec office, said nursing students at a review class in one of the halls saw smoke coming out of the roof, prompting him to call the fire department. –Carla Gomez, Philippine Daily Inquirer
