Ex-CBCP president urges DepEd to consult parents on sex education plan
MANILA, Philippines – The former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) yesterday urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to inform parents of their methods of teaching sex education in elementary and high schools.

In an interview with Church-run Radio Veritas, Iloilo Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said DepEd should provide parents copies of the sex education modules so they can scrutinize the lessons.

“The parents should also make suggestions on how to teach (sex education) to the students using their own language, their way of talking to their own children,” Lagdameo said.

He also said sex education should be taught to more mature students.

Sex education would be compulsory for Grades V and VI and high school students in public schools.

“Grade V might be still early, but if they cannot be prevented from implementing this program there is a need for great prudence and discretion in teaching sex education because I think this is an age of curiosity,” Lagdameo said.

This year, the DepEd will test sex education in 80 elementary schools and 79 high schools nationwide. –Helen Flores (The Philippine Star)
