MANILA, Philippines – An official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called on President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to continue to respect the position of the Church in going against the Reproductive Health (RH) bill.

Archbishop Paciano Aniceto, CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Family and Life head, added that elected government officials owe the people for putting them in power.

“They should respect the belief of the religion, those who put them in power. Majority (of those who voted) are Catholic, therefore they should respect the sentiments of the feelings and the teachings of the Church,” Aniceto told Church-run Radio Veritas.

Before the May 10 automated elections, Aquino and Church officials were at loggerheads over the RH bill, which the latter view as advocating abortion ad abortifacients in addressing the population explosion.

In an interview with reporters after his proclamation, Aquino clarified that he is for responsible parenthood and against abortion. –Dennis Carcamo (philstar.com)
