Amilitant transport group has expressed optimism that the administration of President Benigno Aquino 3rd would be more open in addressing issues hounding the transport sector, particularly repeal of the oil deregulation law and permanent junking of the controversial Radio Frequency Identification System (RFID) of the Land Transportation Office (LTO). The Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsu-per at Operators Nationwide (Piston), through its secretary-general, George San Mateo, over the weekend said they had submitted to President Aquino their “wish list” for the transport sector.
San Mateo added that they hope to see their issues be considered as priorities by the President.
He said that the repeal of the oil deregulation law is one way to prevent oil companies from dictating, or imposing oil prices.
San Mateo said that junking the deregulation law would bring back control of the oil industry to the government.
Piston appealed to Mr. Aquino not to approve the 12 percent value-added tax (VAT) on tolls that the group said would greatly affect motorists because toll operators would just pass the burden to the motorists.
It described the RFID program, which was unveiled in 2009 by the LTO, as a money-making scheme of the Arroyo administration.
The project, which was introduced by the LTO’s information technology provider Stradcom, is part of efforts of the agency to improve its services and performance.
It was temporarily suspended pending further studies and consultations.
Piston also appealed to the President to go after smoke-belchers and private emission test centers that are allegedly engaging in illegal practices. –JEFFERSON ANTIPORDA REPORTER, Manila Times
