Two fishing boat workers die in acetylene blast

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines – Two men died in an acetylene tank explosion on a fishing boat off a coastal village on Jolo island, police reported Friday.

Police said fishing boat workers Noriel Arceo and Renato Diango, both died on the spot after the explosion.

Initial investigations said the acetylene tank, which was on the boat, exploded after hitting a hard object.

The incident happened off Barangay Pamunuan in Jolo town last Wednesday. The boat was slightly damaged.

Seven other workers identified as Reynante de Guzman, Ruffy Billones, German Daygon, Galmar Gallardo, Jay Boganas, Ronnie Velarde and Romel de Guzman suffered minor injuries.

The injured victims have been allowed to go home after receiving treatment at a local hospital.

The Sulu Provincial Police Office, meanwhile, said that the fishing boat’s owner may be liable for the incident. — Report from RJ Rosalado, ABS-CBN Zamboanga
