Math whiz kids score anew

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines’ math whiz kids have again harvested a crop of championship trophies, as well as several silver and bronze medals in the 11th Invitational World Youth Mathematics Inter-Cities Competitions (IWYMIC) and the Korea Elementary Mathematics International Competition held in Incheon, South Korea.

Philippines’ Elementary Level Teams A and B won championship trophies in their respective team competitions.

The members of Team A were Ma. Czarina Angela Lao, 14; Kaye Janelle Yao, 13; Vince Benedict Say, 13; and Jason Joseph Fernandez, 13.

Team B, on the other hand, was composed of Nathanael Joshua Balete, 12; Austin Edrich Chua, 13; Andrew Brandon Ong; and Raymond Joseph Fadri, 11.

Winning silver medals in the individual  high school competitions were Kenneth Co, 15; Sarah Jane Cua, the 16-year-old reigning sudoku grand master of the Philippines; Vance Go, 17; Justin Yturzaeta; and Mikaela Uy.

Some 694 elementary and high school students comprising 151 teams from 26 countries participated in the tournaments.

In total, the Philippine team won two gold medals, one silver, 28 bronzes and 11 merit awards in the contests. –Rainier Allan Ronda (philstar.com)
