7 October 2010, Manila, Philippines — The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), the Associated Labor Unions (ALU) and the Building and Woodworkers International (BWI) will hand over statements urging the passage of bills banning asbestos to legislators in the Philippine Senate and the House of Representatives. The unions will also try to hand over a statement urging Canada to stop mining and exporting asbestos to the Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines.

The activity is in parallel with the TUCP, ALU and BWI discussion with government agencies and other stakeholders on strategies to eliminate asbestos diseases in 4 October 2010. The strategies will form part of a National Program for the Elimination of Asbestos Related Diseases (NPEAD) based on the ILO/WHO Outline.

The activity will be part of Philippine unions program leading to the World Day for Decent Work on October 7, 2010
