State money funding many nonviable SCUs—Budget chief

Published by rudy Date posted on November 27, 2010

MANILA, Philippines—Budget Secretary Florencio Abad on Saturday said government money would be better allocated for a few “centers of excellence” such as the University of the Philippines and the Mindanao State University rather than some state universities and colleges that “are not viable.”

Abad said in a press statement that there was an urgent need for reforms in public higher education. “Else, government funding for SUCs [state universities and colleges] will never be enough.”

“Our funds provided to SUCs are spread out too thinly and without much impact, especially when it comes to providing training in disciplines most needed for sustainable economic development,” he added.

Abad said that at present there are 110 SUCs, “many of which are not viable.”

He said one possible direction for reform “is through consolidation, having strong and focused centers of excellence and state university systems such as the University of the Philippines and the Mindanao State University rather than many individual SUCs.” –Norman Bordadora, Philippine Daily Inquirer
