As part of the World AIDS Day celebration, Department of Health (DOH) HIV – AIDS Coordinator Myrna Alaba briefed department heads and city hall employees of Dumaguete that Central Visayas is second in terms of number of HIV-AIDS cases in the Philippines.

Alaba, DOH Global Fund Program coordinator, disclosed that Cebu City has the majority of HIV – AIDS cases in region 7 where the most common incident is by injecting drugs. DOH has been alarmed with the trend now since most of the cases were acquired through male to male sex intercourse unlike in the previous years where the said illnesses are only common to heterosexual cases.

According to her, a significant change of the number of cases in Cebu City was seen from January to September this year in which the volume has reached to 173 cases compared to previous years where there are only about 10 cases and that these cases are just small part of the whole pie since there are still many people who acquired such diseases but opted not to come out in the open. –Negros Chronicle
