343 companies sign up for Philippine integrity initiative

OVER 300 FIRMS have signed a pledge against bribery and other unethical practices under a private sector campaign seen complementing the government’s anti-corruption efforts.

The list of the 343 “Integrity Pledge” signatories, however, includes only one of the country’s top 10 businesses and none of the top 10 construction companies, a check against the BusinessWorld Top 1000 Corporations in the Philippines 2010 found.

Under the pledge, firms agree to ban bribery, maintain a code of conduct for employees, conduct ethics training programs and prepare accurate financial statements. Signatories also promise to shun business with unscrupulous firms and also forge integrity pacts with state agencies for procurement contracts.

The campaign aims to culminate in an “integrity certification system” that the government can use to narrow down eligible bidders for state projects.

Companies are still welcome to sign on as the goal is to hit 1,000 signatories by yearend, program coordinator Edward C. Gacusana said in a telephone interview yesterday. — JADH, Businessworld
