Gov’t to create farmers’ registry system

Published by rudy Date posted on January 25, 2011

THE AGRICULTURE department will create a database of farmers and farm lands to allow effective planning and monitoring of government services for the sector.

In a statement, Secretary Proceso J. Alcala said the agency needs the participation of local government units and farmers to jumpstart the creation of the National Farmers’ Registry System.

“Thru this voluntary system, farmers will be given highest priority in the blueprinting of programs and services by DA and other government agencies,” Mr. Alcala said.

He added that the database could be used in assessing the extent of damage in agricultural lands after a typhoon.

The project will employ a community-based approach, in which data will be gathered through interviews. Pilot areas for the project are the provinces of Quezon, Leyte and Bukidnon. — Kathleen A. Martin, Businessworld
