UCCP supports RH bill

BAGUIO CITY, Jan. 21 (PIA) – The United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) Baguio supports the Reproductive Health Bill but against anything that would harm the health of women and babies.

Senior Minister Bishop Marino Inong said that the UCCP respects the informed choice of couples in planning their family. He stressed that they are not for abortion. They are for the protection of life of the mother and the child.

Inong, who leads the UCCP Baguio which is celebrating its centennial year this February, said he respects the stand of the Catholic Church for natural family planning.

The Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines is against the proposed RH bill and its provisions but a recent announcement of Pope Benedict XVI that condom use can be justified despite the policy of the Roman Catholic Church against contraceptives.

Inong said that the UCCP and the CBCP are meeting but he disclosed that he has no idea yet if the Catholic Church is trying to persuade the UCCP into backing off the RH bill.

The RH bill is still pending in Congress due to debates on its provision but about 70 percent of the congressmen are in favor of the RH bill.

President Benigno Aquino III has not openly endorsed the RH bill but says couples should be given the option to choose between artificial and natural contraception. / PIA CAR
