THERE are about 22.8 million Filipinos travel within the country, the 2009 Household Survey on Domestic Visitors conducted by the National Statistics Office and Department of Tourism (DOT) revealed on Friday.

The survey results showed that most of the travelers are 15 years old and over who traveled two times for any purpose within the country during the period of April 1 to September 30, 2009.

The survey said that this is about 36.9 percent of 61.7 million Filipinos with ages 15 years old and over.

It added that out of the 22.8-million domestic travelers, 52.4 percent of them were females while 47.6 percent were males.

The survey also said that the main purpose of the trip for more than half or 53.3 percent of the total domestic travelers was to visit friends or relatives or to attend family gatherings, while those who traveled for pleasure or vacation totaled 7.8 million, comprising about 34.3 percent of the total domestic travelers.

Luzon, NCR most visited

The survey said that the National Capital Region and other places in Luzon were the most frequently visited place whose main purpose for pleasure or vacation during the period April 1 to September 30, 2009. The results also showed that the other frequently visited provinces Cebu and Lanao del Sur.

Holiday trips

The survey said that the long holiday weekends during Holy Week (April 9 to 12, 2009) was the most traveled period of domestic travelers whose main purpose of trip is for pleasure or vacation followed by Labor Day and the end of Ramadan.

The survey, however, said that the 2009 Household Survey on Domestic Visitors is a nationwide undertaking designed to collect data on the travel characteristics and volume of domestic tourism in the country. The surveys were jointly undertaken by the Tourism department and the National Statistics Office. –Jovee Marie N. Dela Cruz, Manila Standard Today
