MANILA — The Department of Education (DepEd) was asked to implement measures that will protect teachers, students and volunteers from hazardous substances, such as asbestos during the weeklong Brigada Eskwela program.
The Associated Labor Unions-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (ALU-TUCP) said asbestos dust fibers can be deadly and highly-carcinogenic.
These are also present in old school building materials, especially the ones built in the 1970s, the group said.
When asbestos dusts are inhaled even in small amount, anyone exposed will likely suffer an incurable mesothelioma cancer and other forms of cancer. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
