Cargo vessel explodes; 12 injured

At least 12 people including a ship captain were injured when a cargo vessel exploded and caught fire in Pasacao, Camarines Sur on Wednesday evening, police report disclosed.

The MV STC Jeffrey Roy’s engine reportedly sparked and caught fire at around 11 p.m., near the oil depot off Ragay Gulf in Pasacao that injured 12 people including the captain, Nathan Balbona, 53 who is said to be still in critical condition as of posting time.

Reports claimed that the MV STC Jeffrey Roy was on its way to deliver at least 50 drums of crude oil at a gasoline station in Simbuyan Island, Romblon when the explosion took place.

The 11 injured others were identified as Jesmar Ragot, 24; Reynel Napol, 26; Erasmo Rosero, 53; Rolly Mangarin, 23; Dennis Mangarin, 34; Joebert Mangarin, 24 and Noe Maalipay, 51.

The victims are now confined at the Bicol Medical Center in Naga City. Balbona is still being observed at the BMC Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
