Asean members discuss draft Asean human rights declaration

VIENTIANE,July 4 (KPL) — Representatives of Asean member nations met at the first meeting of the drafting group on Asean human rights declaration last Friday to discuss about the draft Asean human rights declaration.

A two-day meeting was held at the Plaza Hotel in Vientiane Capital, which hosted by Lao PDR.

The Lao side was led by Vice-Head of ASEAN Department, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Phongsavanh Sisourath who is also Head of drafting group on ASEAN human rights declaration of the Lao PDR.

The meeting was held in Vientiane thanks to the advice from previous meeting of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) on 30 June, to discuss the drafting group on Asean human rights declaration and direction.

The 6th meeting of AICHR was also held at the Plaza Hotel in Vientiane Capital between 28 June and 2 June under the chairmanship of Indonesia’s AICHR representative Rafendi Djamin.

According to the AICHR’s suggestion, the first meeting of the drafting group on ASEAN human rights declaration has discussed about the structure, topics and content which will be put into the drafting of Asean human rights declaration. The Asean human rights declaration will be an action plan to determine cooperation directions to promote cooperation and the protection of human rights in Asean in the future.

Drafting group on Asean human rights declaration was responsible for preparing the draft of Asean human rights declaration.

The draft will be then sent to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights for considering at the end of this year. (KPL)
