THE University of the Philippines and the Ateneo de Manila University are among the top 50 English-teaching universities in the world, Quacquarelli Symonds, a London-based company specializing in education and study abroad, said Wednesday.

In its World University Rankings by Subject for 2011, QS ranked the state-run University of the Philippines 34th in the world, followed by Ateneo at 35th.

De La Salle University made it to the 50-100 bracket, while the University of Santo Tomas was in the 101-150 group.

The QS rankings take into account a school’s academic reputation, reputation among employers, citations per faculty member, the number of international students and faculty, and the ratio of students to faculty.

The top 10 English-teaching universities were Harvard University (1st), University of Oxford (2nd), University of Cambridge (3rd), University of California, Berkeley (4th), Yale University (5th), Columbia University (6th), University of Toronto (7th), Stanford University (8th), University of California, Los Angeles (9th), and University of Chicago (10th).

In QS’ list of top 200 universities in Asia released in May, the University of the Philippines came in 62nd, followed by Ateneo (65th), UST (104th) and De La Salle (107th).

In QS’ Asian rankings for social science subjects, UP ranked 27th while Ateneo came in at 47th. They ranked 20th and 29th, respectively, in arts and the humanities.
