2 Filipinos top math, science tilt

MANILA, Philippines — Students from the Philippines and Singapore were declared champions in the 8th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for primary schools held from September 2 to 6 in Naga City.

Filipino students Farrell Eldrian Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig was declared Theory champion in math, while Raphael Villaluz of San Beda College-Alabang in Muntinlupa won as Experiment champion in science.

“I’m very happy that I was able to make our country proud,” Wu, 12, told the Manila Bulletin at the awarding ceremony. Mrs. Elaine Wu, Farrel’s mom, said his son trained hard to get the trophy.

Twelve-year-old Villaluz said he “was very surprised” when his named was called as the winner. His father Roland, who was also at the ceremony, said he was “proud and happy” of his son’s stunning feat.

Dylan Toh Shan Hong of Singapore emerged overall champion in Math while fellow Singaporean Shane Tan bagged the overall champion award in science.

Naga City Mayor John Bongat, Vice Mayor Gabriel Bordado and Regional Director Tomas Brinas of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) awarded the medals and trophies to the winners.

On the other hand, Choi Jong Yoon of South Korea won as Exploration champion in math, while Ferris Prima Nugraha of Indonesia was Theory champion in science.

Overall, Thailand won 6 gold, 13 silver, and 4 bronze medals, while the Philippines got 6 gold, 12 silver and 38 bronze medals, said Dr. Simon Chua, chief organizer and president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).

Singapore got 6 gold and 6 silver medals, followed by Indonesia with 3 gold, 4 silver, and 7 bronze medals; China with 3 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals; Sri Lanka with 2 gold, 7 silver, and 9 bronze medals; Taiwan with 2 gold, 5 silver, and 6 bronze medals; South Africa with 2 silver and 7 bronze medals; South Korea with 2 gold and 1 silver medals; Malaysia with 4 bronze medals; Iran with 3 bronze medals, and India with 1 bronze medal.

The gold medalists for the Philippines in math are Farrell Eldrian Wu, Sedrick Scott Keh of Xavier University, Clyde Wesley Ang of Chiang Kai Shek College, and Errol John Suarez of Bicol University in Legazpi City. Filipino gold medalists in science are Raphael Villaluz and Christian Philip Gelera of UP Integrated School.

Filipino silver medalists in math are Andrea Jaba, Alberto John Patupat, Elijamin Wolfgang Claveria, Mark Christopher Uy, John Aries Ceazar Hingan, Patrick Allen Tañada, and Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa. Science silver medalists are Aroanna Sofia Ramos, Mikaela San Ramon, Xavier Jefferson Ray Go, Yna Mari Ojeda, and Hazel France Doblon.

The math bronze medalists are Shaquille Wyan Que, Terence Brian Tsai, Kyle Aiden Gattud, Frederick Matthew Corpuz, Vicente Raphael Chan, Luke Matthews Bernardo, Mark Ebson Susana, Samantha Louise Wong, Justine Marcus Opulencia, Jilian Therese Robredo, Jose Ignacio Locsin, Emmanuel Paolo Santos, Rugilyn Briones, Angela Claire Panes, Viq Ashley Alentajan, Christopher John Borja, and Cheska Marina Hufano.

Science bronze medalists are Miko Johnson Co, Justin Brian Razon, Christian Joseph Naldoza, Lorenz Matthew Tech, Azriel Cais Baluyut, Matthew Johann Uy, Frances Marie Lyle Coralde, Guinevere Soria, Ina Francesca Caramoan, Franchell Eda Javier, Luis Alfonso Montales, Q-Shane Lilian Fortuna, Miguel Angelo Bondad, Reyshell Marie Lat, Paolo Carmelo Notorio, Lorenzo Thomas Lazaro, Jehiel Angelica Mari Cea, Kristine Mae Alo, Christopher James Balayan, Norking Ace Sagle, and Mary Katherine Balane.

The 8th IMSO was organized by Naga City and the MTG in cooperation with the DoST’s Science Education Institute (DoST-SEI) and the Department of Education (DepEd). –JONATHAN M. HICAP, Manila Bulletin
