BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – Communist guerrillas torched heavy equipment, three warehouses and three dump trucks owned by contractors of Dole Philippines and destroyed the firm’s eight-hectare banana plantation in Tago, Surigao del Sur before dawn Monday, police said.

Tago town is about 200 kilometers away from this city, the administrative capital of the Caraga region.

Surigao del Sur Gov. Johnny Pimentel earlier said he was saddened by Dole’s plans to temporarily stop its banana production in the province as it had to contend with New People’s Army attacks almost every other month in its plantations.

Last Sunday, NPA rebels also torched 12 passenger buses at the Victory Liner compound in Capas, Tarlac. –Ben Serrano The Philippine Star
