THE BEST is an acronym of a program that was just recently organized and hosted by the Baguio City National High School which means Basic Entrepreneurial Skills Training Program. This project is one of the components of the Reach out Community Development: Care and Serve (Recode Case) Project, the flagship program of the Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals (Society) of the Philippines (CYEPSPI).
The youth are the future business leaders of the Country. Our nation, as well as, the community where everybody belongs will depend on the future leaders, which come from the youth of today. There is really a need to properly train, guide and give quality business education and training this sector. The management of our economy and our meager resources requires good and highly trained individual. Hence, the organizing agencies, the Baguio City National High School in partnership with the CYEPSPI would therefore intensify the entrepreneurial skills development training of the high school students through the BEST program.
The BEST (Basic Entrepreneurial Skills Training) Program for the youth promotes from the very basic component from GENERATE YOUR BUSINESS IDEAS (GYB) and START AND IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS (SIYB) by producing or rather developing micro, small and medium enterprises and eventually generating employment to workers. Likewise, this project will upgrade the existing entrepreneurs through adequate provision of techno-managerial inputs to start, operate and improve their chosen enterprises. The program will also provide interventions for said intents to be realized through a package of training programs, consultancy and access to financing. It does not spoon-feed entrepreneurs but firmly champions the full development of the abilities, skills, capacities of the potential independent minded and self-sustaining and confident entrepreneur who can triumphantly capitalize on business opportunities and master obstacles caused by the environmental and natural calamities.
Last October 8 and 9, 2011, in pursuance with the CYEPSPI’s mission and objectives in partnership with the BCNHS Main and its annexes conducted the two-day BEST Program. There were about forty five (45) participants joined the seminar; thirty five (35) students and ten (10) Teachers and Head Teachers namely; Mr. Wilton C. Anton, Head Teacher VI – TLE-BCNHS (Main); Ms. Irene E. Chaangan, HT III – TLE; Coordinator and organizer, Felto P. Agpawa BCNHS-Lindawan; and with seven (7) Teachers who came from the BCNHS(Main) and its Secondary school annexes from Dona Aurora, Bakakeng, Happy Hallow, San Vicente, Fort del Pilar, Sto. Tomas, Rizal, Lindawan.
After the usual activities, the program proper started with the structured brainstorming exercises on generating their business ideas. The student participants were able to generate lots of business ideas.
The students were asked to do the screening process of their ideas list and as a result, these young upcoming entrepreneurs were able to come up with their own business ideas.
Business ideas that they have the passion in them, activities that are very close to their hearts and something they love and enjoy doing them.
The business ideas generated by the group were the following: Trading (Bookstore, clothing line, pharmacy, grocery store), Service (Restaurant, Food chain, Pet shop, flower shop, Painting, Skills/Talent Training Center, Animal Health Clinic, Catering Service); Manufacturing (Wax Making, Bakeshop) Animal Raising (Rabbit). Some lectures on entrepreneurship development took place.
The next exercise that was The BEST (Business, Expenses and Savings Training) Game took place. The participants learned the rudiments of business planning from marketing, buying, costing, stock control, manufacturing of the chosen product during the exercises, record keeping and finally came up with a simple income statement. This simulated learning experience provides the platform for participants to run their own virtual businesses during the exercises, to apply the theory of learning in practice and to experience firsthand the impact of their management decisions. This portion of the two-day activities was conducted by Ms. Vilma Abad, Investment Promotions Officer, DTI-CAR and an alumnus of the BCNHS.
