NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Oct. 11 (PIA) — Three nationwide surveys are being conducted this month by the National Statistics Office. These include the Survey on Overseas Filipinos, Survey on Children and the quarterly Labor Force Survey .

These surveys will be undertaken from October 8 to 31 covering the pre determined sample barangays all over the Philippines.

In Negros Occidental, there are about 1,400 sample households that will be visited and interviewed by NSO personnel to gather information on Filipino citizens who left for abroad during the last five years, to collect data on working children 5-17 years old and to gather data on the economic activities of the household for the three respective surveys.

The 2011 Survey on Children (SOC) is designed to collect data on the demographic and socio economic characteristics of working children 5-17 years old.

This is the third in the series of surveys to be undertaken as part of the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (ILO-IPEC).

The first survey was undertaken in 1995 while the second was conducted in 2001.

To realize the goals of this project, the survey intends to collect data on children aged 5-17 years to obtain information on the following: size and key characteristics of working children, classified according to their usual activity during the past 12 months, main occupation and other activities, gender, status of employment, place of work, and type of industry and occupation engaged in;

The SOC aims to know the working conditions of economically active children, which include assessment of their wages, days and hours work, management of earnings, reasons for working, type of occupational illnesses, disability and impairment, presence of adult supervision, exposure to work related risks, use of tools or equipment at work, and areas for improvement of child’s working condition;

SOC will also get information on the housekeeping chores and activities of the working children, school attendance, difficulties encountered in studies, enrolment, and main reason for dropping out of school; and lastly to collect information on the characteristics of household members including children, living away from home, presence of and involvement of child members on household operated activities, family income and expenditures and housing characteristics.

Meanwhile, the Survey on Overseas Filipinos (SOF) aims to provide data on overseas Filipinos particularly the OCWs and their contribution to the economy.

The SOF is also designed to obtain national estimates on the number of overseas Filipinos including overseas workers and their socio-economic characteristics, and to provide estimates on the amount of cash and in kind transfer received by the families and mode of remittance.

Only those family members who traveled outside of the country within the period October 2006 to September 2011 for any reasons are included.

The Labor Force Survey (LFS) is a regular undertaking of the NSO in cooperation with the Department Of Labor and Employment, primarily geared towards the estimation of the levels of employment and unemployment and to gather data on the economic activities of households in the country.

Just like other surveys being conducted by the NSO, the data that will be gathered in these three surveys are for statistical purposes only and will be published in summary forms.

As provided in Executive Order No. 121 known as the Reorganization Act of the Philippine Statistical System, the data will not in any way be used for investigation and law enforcement purposes.*(EAD/JCM-PIA6/NSO Negros Occidental)
