Functional literacy not so high, Filipinos’ education still growing

THE Department of Education (DepEd) insists that the literacy rate in the Philippines is quite high compared to other Asian countries over the past two years and country has succeeded in expanding its education in quantitative terms despite recent studies that showed that the education system has been challenged by different emerging trends.

The DepEd in claiming success cited increasing completion rate of students in elementary and high school level.

Data released by DepEd showed that the completion rate for elementary schools stood at 72.18% in school year 2009-2010 and 72.11% in school year 2010-2011.

The completion rate for secondary schools, on the other hand, stood at 73.74% in school year 2009-2010 and compared to 74.67% in school year 2010-2011.

Earlier, the education department disclosed that out of 10 grade one students only eight managed to reach grade III, six managed to graduate the elementary level. Of these numbers, five eventually finished high school.

The DepEd admitted that the increase raises several questions especially with the quality of education in the country because although the statistics in education is high, still the economic situation is not so good.

The DepEd said with the rapid growing number of students, who find that they cannot attend the traditional classrooms and considering that students today are inclined with new trends especially in technology, a new tool was created which can help to increase more and provide better quality of education to students.

This was realized with DepEd partnership with Virtual Campus, a first of its kind in the country which makes ready-to-use content to make learning and teaching more convenient for both students and teachers.

The Virtual Campus is an advanced and powerful online community, e-learning and communication platform that allows the collaborative learning and activity sharing.

This is an online community of teachers, students, parents and experts connected together online and on mobile phones.

The Association of Private School Administrators of Muntinlupa (APSAM) has seen the advantage of this new tool and has embarked to this modernization program to strengthen its educational service to the youth. –SAMMY MARTIN, Manila Times
