How to be a nice person

A group of friends who went deer hunting separated into pairs for the day.

That night, one hunter returned alone, staggering under a huge deer.

“Where’s Harry?” asked another hunter.

“He fainted a couple miles up the trail,” Harry’s partner answered.

“You left him lying there alone and carried the deer back?”

“It was a tough decision,” said the hunter. “But I figured no one is going to steal Harry”.

Some people really turn off others by being so selfish and by caring only for themselves. What they fail to understand is that, all things being equal, people prefer to do business and be in the company of nice people. And, all things not being equal, people still prefer to do business and be in the company of nice people.

There are people out there who desperately want to feel important. So they bully, they strong-arm, they threaten, they intimidate and they find sinister delight and satisfaction in these things that convince them that they are indeed important. But they are delusional! It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.

Here are some practical ways on how you and I can get along better with people. This is important because people who do not get along with you will never go along with you. And if you happen to be a leader, you’re toast!

1. SPEAK THE TRUTH ALL THE TIME.

When speaking, whether to a person or to a crowd, be sure to say only things that are true, things that are kind and things that are necessary. When spoken to, focus on the person speaking, and don’t butt in just because you think you have something better to say.

2. MAKE PROMISES YOU CAN KEEP.

Sales people know this very well and I emphasize this in my seminars: Under promise but over deliver. Better still, make promises sparingly.

3. COMPLIMENT AND ENCOURAGE PEOPLE.

There is nothing more refreshing than a kind word or compliment.

4. RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE’S POINT OF VIEW.

Agree to disagree gracefully. Do not argue, but develop the ability to hold opposing views and study the merits of each one.

5. TALK POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE.

Fight the temptation to gossip, refuse to listen to gossip and refrain from bad-mouthing others.

6. DEAL WITH CRITICISMS POSITIVELY.

Find out if there is any TRUTH to what a person is saying about you; if so, make changes. If there is no truth to the criticism, ignore it and live so that no one will believe the negative remark.

7. MASTER YOUR MOODS AND EMOTIONS

The moment you feel anger rising up within you, forget counting to 10. Count to 1,000 instead! Zip your mouth and do not say anything, because words said at the height of emotion will bring you regret when you’re back to normal.

8. LET YOUR LIFE BE YOUR BEST PRESS RELEASE.

Live your life well, and let your own virtues speak for themselves. People who need to impress people with who they are simply confirm that they are not at all impressing!

9. BE A FORGIVING PERSON.

Most people are doing the best they can. If they fall short of your standards or expectations, do not look down on them. Remember, you and I fall short of others’ standards and expectations as well.

10. HAVE A HEALTHY SENSE OF HUMOR

Everybody loves a person who knows how to laugh with others… not AT others.

Thank God for the life He has given you. Treat other people well and you will be well-liked. And don’t be surprised if they refer to you as a very nice person. –Francis J. Kong (The Philippine Star)
