212 confrimed HIV-positive — SACCL

MANILA, Philippines — A total of 212 individuals were confirmed HIV-positive by the STD/AIDS Cooperative Central Laboratory (SACCL) in its November 2011 report posted by the Philippine HIV/AIDS registry.

The latest figure was 89 percent higher compared to the same period last year with 112 new HIV cases.

“Males having sex with other Males (105 cases) were the predominant type of sexual transmission…Of the 212 HIV positive cases, three were reported as AIDS cases, one was female and two were males. All acquired the infection through sexual contact Of the AIDS cases, there was one reported death for this month; a 26-year old female,” ,” the surveillance said.

From 1984 to 2011, a total of 8,096 HIV cases have been recorded where 940 have been confirmed AIDS cases.

A total of 61 individuals aged 15 to 24 were recorded as HIV positive and there was one death due to AIDS recorded within the month.

A total of 340 deaths due to HIV were recorded since 1984 up to 2011.

“From January to November 2011, 860 blood units were screened reactive for HIV and referred to RITM for confirmation. All these HIV reactive blood units were immediately sent to RITM and not transfused to anyone,” the surveillance said. “For November 2011, out of 67 screened HIV reactive blood units referred for confirmation, 17 units were confirmed positive for HIV by RITM, and 50 were negative for HIV.” –JENNY F.
