POEA to allow OEC processing in malls

MANILA, Philippines – Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) may soon find securing overseas employment certificate (OECs) as easy as going shopping.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has announced plans to adopt this year online as well as “outside” processing of OECs for Filipinos seeking employment abroad.

POEA chief Hans Cacdac said they are looking at funding sources for the implementation of online processing of OECs in the second half of 2012.

“We need to secure a budget because the 2012 budget does not include fund for online processing, but we are looking at the e-processing budget to fund this project,” he said.

OFWs are required to secure overseas employment certificate and travel exit clearance from the POEA before departure. An average of 3,000 returning OFWs come to POEA each day to secure the exit clearance. The figure doubles during the holidays. –Mayen Jaymalin The Philippine Star
