Apec makes history by cutting tariffs on ‘green’ goods

ASIA-PACIFIC Economic Cooperation (Apec) leaders yesterday agreed to cut trade tariffs to just five per cent for agreed environmentally-friendly goods from 2015, something the World Trade Organisation has failed to do in a decade.
The initiative exemplifies the 21-member economic grouping’s seriousness in promoting green technology to control climate change.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak told reporters here yesterday that Apec leaders also agreed to hasten efforts to reduce trade barriers, while preventing the creation of new ones, to strengthen trade within the region.

Najib attended the first day of the summit yesterday after arriving from Kuala Lumpur with his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, on Friday night.
