Noy signs Kasambahay bill into law

MANILA, Philippines – President Aquino has signed into law the Kasambahay bill for domestic workers, according to two separate reliable sources.

However, the bill aimed at setting a minimum wage for some two million domestic workers nationwide is still awaiting the assignment of a republic act number, the sources added.

Secretary Manuel Mamba of the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office said they have not yet been informed of the bill’s signing.

Malacañang insiders said the bill’s proponents are requesting for a ceremonial signing.

In November last year, the House of Representatives ratified the Kasambahay bill. Last Jan. 16, Aquino told reporters in Mandaue City that the bill had yet to reach his desk. “I have yet to check its status,” he said.

Two of the authors, Representatives Juan Edgardo Angara of Aurora and Joseph Victor Ejercito Estrada of San Juan, said the bill would provide domestic workers huge benefits. –Delon Porcalla (The Philippine Star)
