MANILA – If you love math, data, and crunching numbers, a P35,000-plus monthly salary awaits you.

The amount is the median monthly salary that statisticians get in the Philippines, according to Jose Ramon Albert, secretary general of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB).

Albert, in an article on the state agency’s website, said a career in statistics is among the highly-compensated occupations both in the Philippines and in the United States.

He said statisticians rank 10th in Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) of the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) top 10 high-paying jobs in the Philippines, earning around Php 35,010 a month.

An actuary — a higher-paying job that earns a median monthly salary of P35,480.00 — also uses statistics to estimate risks for insurance companies, Albert added.

Top 10 highest-paying jobs in the Philippines as of 2010, according to BLES’ December 2012 report, are:

Art Director P69,286.00
Geologist P64,889.00
Aircraft Pilot, Navigator and Flight Engineer P57,789.00
Mining Engineer and Metallurgical Engineer P55,638.00

Production Supervisor and General Foreman P36,133.00
Actuary P35,480.00
Call Center Representative/Customer Service Associate P35,424.00
Statistician P35,010.00

How does one get a career in statistics?

“For entry-level, this job requires a bachelor’s degree related to Statistics and Mathematics. A master’s degree in Statistics or Mathematics, on one hand, is required for occupations needing advanced level of expertise, while Ph.D. is required generally for research and academic jobs,” Albert said. “Because of such range of capabilities of statisticians, being employed in any industry is very easy.”
