Chinese detained for maltreatment of Filipino employee

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur—A Chinese national landed in jail here on Friday for allegedly abusing one of his employees.

Michael Chan, who manages a dry goods store here, was charged with hitting one of his workers, Alvin Candor, 20, with a ceramic plate for being late for work. The assault left a deep cut on the worker’s head.

Chan was quickly arrested by policemen and is now detained at the police jail here where six other Chinese nationals are also being held for illegal mining.

Senior Inspector Ephraim Detuya, town police chief, said Chan’s trouble worsened when it was found that he is staying in the Philippines illegally.

He said the store manager was a Chinese national and did not speak any other language except Mandarin.

A local, who spoke Mandarin and helped the police in its investigation, quoted Chan as saying he has no travel documents because another Chinese national, who is based in Davao City, is holding his passport. –Chris Panganiban, Inquirer Mindanao
