The Philippines and Thailand discussed ways to strengthen their cooperation in protecting migrant workers from transnational crimes, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
Philippine Ambassador to Thailand Jocelyn Garcia discussed the matter during a call on new Thai Labor Minister Police Captain Dr. Chalerm Ubumrung, the DFA said.
“During the courtesy call, they discussed Philippines-Thailand labor relations, specifically on how the two countries can cooperate further in protecting migrant workers from the pernicious effects of transnational crimes, including human trafficking and trafficking in dangerous drugs,” it said.
In the Philippines, the Bureau of Immigration had intensified its efforts to catch human trafficking rings and prevent victims from leaving the country.
The DFA has also reminded OFWs not to engage in the drug trade, including being used as drug couriers.
With Garcia at the courtesy call were Philippine Minister and Consul General Edgar Badajos and Third Secretary and Vice Consul Anna Marie Santos. — LBG, GMA News
