A 22-year-old gold miner died due to gas poisoning in an abandoned tunnel in Sagada town in Mountain Province on Wednesday.

Police identified the fatality as Ely Malidong, a native of Sagada town, state-run Philippines News Agency reported Thursday.

The PNA report quoted Cordillera police spokesman Senior Superintendent Davvy Limmong as saying rescuers found Malidong sprawled inside the abandoned gold mine tunnel.

Limmong cited initial information indicating Malidong may have died as early as Wednesday.

The PNA report said residents narrated a similar case happened last year, when two brothers engaged in small-scale mining ventured into the abandoned mining pits.

Sagada is known for its fine pottery and weather, which may be colder than Baguio City. — LBG, GMA News
