18 Region 6 colleges, universities apply for tuition hike

BACOLOD CITY , Philippines – At least 18 private and public colleges and universities in Region 6 (Western Visayas) have applied for tuition hike for academic year 2014-2015.

Acting Commission on Higher Education (CHED) regional director Rex Casiple said they are expecting more institutions to apply for a tuition increase.

Most of the applicants are schools in Bacolod City and elsewhere in Negros Occidental.

The deadline for the submission of applications for tuition increase is April 1, according to CHED.

Casiple said not all applications will be approved since these will be thoroughly evaluated by CHED “to ensure that they have fully complied with the requirements.”

Schools seeking a tuition hike must also increase the salaries of their teachers and improve their learning facilities, he said.

Casiple added that there should be a dialogue among the school management, students, faculty, alumni and parents on the proposed tuition increase, which should not be more than 10 percent of the existing tuition rates.

The applicant schools should also have no deficiencies in their curricular offerings, he said. –Danny Dangcalan (The Philippine Star)
