CHEd lifts moratorium on new business administration, HRM, IT courses

MANILA, Philippines—The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) has lifted its moratorium against opening new programs on business administration (BA), hotel and restaurant management (HRM) and information technology (IT) by next school year.

In its June 9 memorandum order, CHEd said the continuous hiring here and abroad in the business process outsourcing (BPO), tourism and IT industries justified having additional undergraduate and graduate courses in BA, HRM and IT.

In lifting the moratorium it imposed in 2011, CHEd also considered Philippines’ leadership in the IT-BPO sector; the regional and global increase in labor mobility; the emergence of the demand for new competencies such as business analytics; and international agreements on borderless economy.

But CHEd said only qualified universities and colleges would be allowed to open programs in BA, HRM and IT by next school year.

Schools that want to open new BA, HRM and IT programs must have autonomous/deregulated status for private higher education institutions and SUC Level III status for state universities and colleges; a Center of Excellence or Center of Development accreditation in the program to be offered; and at least a Level II status in any of the programs from CHEd recognized accrediting agencies.
