Here are more bits and pieces from the report of MTR HK on the condition of our MRT 3.

Speed restriction of 45kph was currently imposed for safety reason. The growth of passenger capacity in 2015 will increase train loading as well as increase trend of broken rail failure, if no systematic plan to restore the track conditions

The existing material stock level for rail and crossing was far below the required level. Procurement strategy for small amount order will be an issue for effective track maintenance.

The increase of traffic loading in 2015 will impose additional tonnage to the track system. It is anticipated that the trend of broken rail failure will be increased if no action is taken to tackle the existing rail defects.

The overall system performance, in general, is not satisfactory due to inappropriate maintenance, environmental factors, impact from poor condition of track rails, etc. It is anticipated that the system performance would continue to deteriorate and the equipment life shall be shortened rapidly if mitigation actions are not implemented shortly.

The physical operating condition of the system, as observed during the site survey, is less than satisfactory. The equipment is affected by poor environment in situ, where fine dust and moisture from the environment can deteriorate the equipment and shorten their life rapidly.

Housekeeping must be enhanced to ensure that the equipment is housed in dust free and fully air conditioned environment in order to ensure the system will continue to operate in safe and reliable manner. –http://www.philstar.com/business/2014/11/07/1388902/oil-prices-going-down
